Family Photo Sessions Explained!

I have been photographing families for over 15 years now (yes I started very young for those working out my age!). Each family I have worked with have all been totally unique, each special in their own way. I always get the same response each time- that they are so glad that they took the time to get it done. Years go by so quick and life is so busy that we rarely get time to lift our head above water and take stock of the stage we are at.

WHY GET A FAMILY PORTRAIT?

Families usually need an excuse to remind them to get their family photographs done, I have had all sides of the spectrum, families who have received news that a precious member of their family may not be around much longer and also brand new families welcoming their first baby into the world. I am beyond privileged to be part of these moments and honoured to be chosen to have the job of making these important photographs that will be treasured forever.

You don't need any excuse or event, it's simply something lovely to do with your family and a chance to create something to remind you of the way you are.

COMMON RESPONSES FROM PEOPLE THINKING ABOUT A FAMILY PORTRAIT:

'WE HATE GETTING OUR PHOTOS TAKEN'

The most  common response from 90% of all my clients. And one I relate to because I also hate getting my photograph taken. Actually no, I despise it, I know that I will be blinking/making a face/ not looking anywhere near as good as I may have thought.

However, everyone and anyone can look good in photos (maybe even me) if they are done in the right way. We all look our best when we are relaxed, at ease and mid-laugh is usually my favourite. You may think that you don't look good in photographs when in fact it may be that you just have never had your portrait done properly before.

'WE DON'T HAVE THE TIME'

It may feel like a struggle to find a time that is suitable for the whole family between sports fixtures, birthday parties, holidays but remember that you only need ONE HOUR. And if all goes well, the session can be over even quicker than that. It may be the most valuable hour that you have spent with your family in years.

I NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT FIRST'

There is never the right time for a family photo.  My most common reply is 'I will come back when I lose a bit of weight'. To which my response is you will look back at these images and wish you appreciated the way you looked then (honestly!). Again, I think a lot of people are scared of how they will look in photos as they have never had their photo taken professionally before. My aim as a photographer is to capture you in the best possible way.
